DePuy ASRTM Hip Implant Recall

Finizio & Finizio, P.A. is investigating claims against DePuy Orthopedics, a division of Johnson and Johnson, concerning DePuy ASR hip implants which were recalled by the company on August 26, 2010.

The hip implants have been associated with pain, infections, fractures, dislocation, sensitivity to the metal and loosening of parts.
 
On August 26, 2010, after selling 93,000 units which generated $5.4 Billion in revenue, Johnson and Johnson's DePuy Orthopedics unit voluntarily recalled their hip implant products.

Fifteen or more years is the life expectancy of most hip replacements, however, a large percentage of DePuy Hip implants begin to wear down quickly generating high volumes of metal debris which is absorbed into the body causing destruction of surrounding bone and soft tissue requiring the need for early revision surgery.
 
Revision surgery for a hip replacement is complicated and less successful than a first hip replacement.  The reasons for revision surgery include infection, fracturing of the implant or the bone around the implant or loosening of the implant. In dealing with infection the implant must be removed, the leg stabilized, the infection is then treated over a number of months and once the infection is gone the patient undergoes another surgery to reinsert the implant.
